Christiane Nord
B.A. (Hon.) in translation for German, Spanish and English (Heidelberg 1967), professor emerita of the University of Applied Sciences (Hochschule) Magdeburg-Stendal, Germany, Extraordinary Professor and Research Fellow of the University of the Free State, Bloemfontein, South Africa (since 2007). Ph.D. in Romance Studies (Spanish, Portuguese) (Heidelberg 1983) and post-doc qualification (“Habilitation”) for Applied Translation Studies and Translation Pedagogy (Vienna 1993). Honorary doctorates from the University of Geneva, Switzerland (2015) and the Universidad de Baja California in Tijuana, Mexico (2017). Professor of Spanish-German translation as well as general and specific Translation Studies, with a focus on functionalist approaches, at various universities in Germany and Austria from 1967 until her retirement in 2005. Since then, talks and seminars on functionalism in translation studies at universities and conferences (almost) worldwide.
More than 220 publications in German, Spanish, English, with translations into Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese, Korean, French, Greek and Arabic, about the theory, methodology and pedagogy of translation, particularly Text Analysis in Translation (1991, 2005) and Translating as a Purposeful Activity (1997, 2018). Various translations, among them, together with Klaus Berger, New Testament Scholar at Heidelberg University, a new German translation of the New Testament and early Christian writings (1999). Honorary professor of the University of Vigo, Spain and Visiting Professor of various universities of the People’s Republic of China.
