Rainier Grutman
A Professor of French and Translation Studies at the University of Ottawa (Canada), Rainier Grutman was trained in Romance philology, Comparative Literature and Translation Studies at Namur, Leuven and Madrid universities before earning his Ph.D. in French in Montreal.
The practice of bilingual writers who translate their own work has been a focal point of his research, which combines literary scholarship with an ongoing interest in translation. In addition to a collection of essays (L’Autotraduction littéraire: perspectives théoriques, ed. with Alessandra Ferraro for Classiques Garnier, Paris, 2016), he has published many articles on the topic (in English, French, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese). His most recent contribution is a volume describing The Poetics of Self-translation (Routledge, 2026).
