The term simultaneous interpreting is sometimes used interchangeably with conference interpreting, as this mode is the most often employed in a conference setting. In fact, conference interpreting is a broader concept encompassing also consecutive interpreting and, at the same time, a narrower concept, since simultaneous interpreting can also be performed outside conference settings. Whispered interpreting or chuchotage is a variant of simultaneous interpreting, which essentially involves the same process of concurrent rendering of the original message, but is performed outside the interpreting booth for a limited audience of one or two persons.

The term simultaneous interpreting refers to the practice of listening to a speaker’s message in one language and rendering this message simultaneously into another language for the target audience. In contrast to consecutive interpreting, in which the interpreter speaks after the original speaker has finished the speech or a part of it, simultaneous interpreting is done in real time with only a short delay (called decalage or ear-voice span) of a few seconds. It is thanks to its simultaneity that simultaneous interpreting has gained its status as the dominant mode in a conference setting. As the interpretation is performed concurrently, it allows to save time and ensure smooth communication into multiple languages at the same time.
In this entry we will explain the basics of simultaneous interpreting providing a general overview of the settings in which it is performed as well as the equipment and technologies used. We will also take a look at the issues of working languages, directionality, and interpreter training. Since simultaneous interpreting is a highly demanding task, separate sections will be devoted to the difficulties involved in this mode of interpreting and the strategies interpreters resort to in order to overcome these constraints. Finally, we shall briefly outline some selected lines of research on simultaneous interpreting.
