origins
The term frame semantics was coined by the founder of the theory, Charles Fillmore, in the 1970s. Frame, however, appears in various publications around that time, e.g., by Marvin Minsky (1975) or Irving Goffman (1974) and resembles other concepts introduced at that time, such as script or schema (see Tannen 1979; Busse 2012 on the development of these concepts). The term frame has some roots in the work of linguists on word fields (e.g., Trier 1973); another source for the concept of frame is Bartlett’s (1932) schema theory from psychology, in which he stated that memories are not just storages of stimuli but are constructed according to existing, developing patterns.

abstract
Frame semantics is concerned with the empirical study of the relations between linguistic units and mental concepts, and how their shapes and interrelations constitute the basis for the understanding of language. A key concept is the frame, a system of interrelated concepts such as the Kinship frame, which defines roles such as Relatives, attributes of these roles, relations between them, etc. Frames are thus mental structures for categorizing sections of perceived realities, so-called scenes, relating them to prototypical properties, entities, logics of action etc. They are shaped, inter alia, by our individual and cultural backgrounds, beliefs, experiences.
This entry will introduce the theory of Frame semantics and how it has been made fruitful for the analysis of and the method of translation. Among the challenges are the multi-perspectivity of scenes and systematic differences in conceptual structures typically encoded in language. Various other factors may come into play when determining which part of a scene is linguistically encoded, resulting in differences in which frames are expressed in an original and its translations. Despite these potential differences, we can still conclude semantic similarity on the basis of a frame analysis, as frames can be related to each other and the overall scene can be re-constructed by means of mutual activation of related frames.
