abstract
While activist translation is certainly as old as translation itself, it is only in the last two decades that it has become the object of scholarly interest in translation studies. This vibrant site of knowledge production has ushered a volte-face in the field, historically influenced by a traditional and conservative view of translation as a neutral and apolitical practice. Addressing power asymmetries across contexts and modalities, activist translators and interpreters intervene to confront colonial legacies, racialization, gender and sexual oppression. Organizing themselves in community, in social movements, and solidarity networks, and around collaborative online platforms, social media, and other information and communication technologies, they have become key actors in the production and circulation of alternative political narratives across contexts. In so doing, they have become instrumental in repositioning translation and interpreting beyond the mainstream. At the same time, the exacerbation of power asymmetries, the spiraling concentration of wealth, power and technologies, and the rise of a new wave of authoritarianism and conflict across the world, put to test our ability to envision and bring about social justice. In this context, a translational approach to social justice may provide a renewed transdisciplinary and intersectional framework for reimagining and ushering inclusive, sustainable and fair ecosystems of knowledge and society.
